第一节 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题 卡上将该项涂黑。(共 20 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 40 分) A Are you one of those who always fear whenever a dog is approaching? If you are, you have got phobia(a very strong feeling of being afraid of something). Of all human fears, phobias may be the most uncontrollable. They are most often caused by a particular situation or object. In general, phobias can mainly be divided into three varieties. To begin with, agoraphobia is a fear of staying in strange surroundings, for example, an unfamiliar place, or an open area. Social phobia refers to the anxiety people show when they have to stay or perform on social events, for instance, speaking in front of the class. Lastly, there are a wide range of specific phobias. People suffering from this kind of phobia are terrified of specific objects or creatures. such as spiders, perhaps to your surprise, clowns. Besides, there are about six hundred and fifty phobias having been listed by psychologists(心理学家)as yet. Faced with their phobias, many people choose to do nothing but just escape the situations or objects they fear. Psychologists, however, warn that if not treated properly, this kind of anxiety will get worse, so that it may disturb the sleep pattern, cause physical symptoms, and finally affect their daily activities. As for treatment, clinical research has discovered that medicine for anxiety is not successful in curing phobias. However. the anxiety disorders can be efficiently treated through cognitive behavioral therapy(认知行为疗法), through which patients are led to inspect the connections between their own fear und the situation or object, and then actively choose the acceptable treatments. Also, other treatments proved effective in reducing phobias are Meditation (quiet thought that can help people relax) listening to calming , music, and so on. 41. Phobias are mainly caused by . A. anxiety B. animal attacks C. terrible dreams and imagination D. a certain situation or thing 42. Which do psychologists NOT use for effective treatment of phobias? A. To take medicine for anxiety B. To listen to comforting light music C. To lose oneself in a peaceful environment D. To understand the very source of one's own anxiety 43. Which of the following statements about phobias is CORRECT? A. Actors call help people to cure their phobias. B. Phobias can be divided into six hundred and fifty types. C. Those suffering from phobias may not sleep well or work normally. D. Cognitive behavioral therapy demands little participation from patients. 44. B Research on the human brain has been attracting more and more scientists in recent years, just like the booming hi-tech industry. One of the latest research topics is how to change the human brain or combine the computer and the human brain, i.e. to transplant a chip into a human brain. This idea may make everyone’s dream come true. If we compare a human brain to a hard disc, what the scientists are doing is to enlarge the capacity of the hard disc. For the time being, there are some difficulties in such transplant experiments, but scientists never give up. Experiments have started on animals. In 1996, a transplant experiment performed at the Defense and Military Physiology Research Institute in the U.S. turned a bear into a dolphin. The dolphin was named Ted, and the bear was named Tallin. Using the most advanced technology available, deep and detailed images were made of the memory area in Ted’s brain containing information about swimming by the scientists. They obtained a series of useful information, the signals transferred by the nervous system. Such information was saved into a button-sized chip, which was then transplanted into the action memory area in Tallin’s brain. The information saved on the chip was released by means of electric power. Recently, another comprehensive memory transplant was performed at the Motor Nerve Research Institute of the University of California. The comprehensive memory transplanted in the experiment included actions, moods, logic, words, images, etc. The experiment involved an entire transplant of the memory area. This was the largest such experiment done so far. The transplant was performed making a transfer from a dog named “Genius” to a dog named “Idiot”. “Genius” could understand and follow up to 100 gestures and orders made by its master. It was a real genius in memorizing. “Idiot” was the younger brother of “Genius”. It had no contact with people at all since its birth. It became an animal with nothing in its brain, without any memory. The operation was a complete success. When the two dogs woke up, “Idiot” had grasped all the abilities “Genius” possessed; it was good at memorizing and sensible. It could follow every gesture and any command given by its master. But “Genius” gave no response to its master, and in fact did not recognize him at all. 45. The purpose of the experiment is _____. A. to combine the computer and the human brain B. to make bear swim C. to make some stupid dog turn clever D. to enlarge the capacity of human brain 46. Which of the following statements is TRUE TRUE? A. The scientists transferred a button-sized chip with useful information in Tallin’s brain. B. The first comprehensive memory transplant was performed at the Motor Nerve Research University. C. The second experiment wasn’t an entire transplant of the memory area. D. The Idiot was an animal with memory before brain experiment

47. What does the underlined word “success” refer to? A. The two dogs woke up. B. They were both good at memorizing. C. The Idiot grasped all the abilities of Genius. D. The Genius grasped all the abilities of Idiot. 48. According to the text, we can infer _____. A. a person can know more after the experiment B. a bear can swim after being transferred a chip with related useful information C. a dog can become clever after entire transplant of the memory area D. it is really good for animals to have been involved in the transplant experiment C Just as the stock market rises and falls in response to what people are willing to put their money behind, we have inside ourselves an inner economy that rises and falls in response to our beliefs about what is possible. Sometimes the degree to which we are willing to challenge our belief systems determines the success of our inner economy. For example, imagine that your family of origin had a belief that musical talent was not something they possessed. As a member of that group, you would likely share that same belief about yourself. As a result, even if you had a great desire to create music, you might be hesitant to really get behind yourself, fearing that your investment (投资)would not pay off. Even if you had the courage to follow your passion, your inner belief that you are not talented would probably be a major obstacle to investing your energy in your dream. On the other hand, if you found a way to release that negative belief, a great flood of energy would pour forth, greatly increasing the likelihood of your success. How much energy we are willing to invest in the various ideas, dreams, and visions we carry within is like the money people are, or are not, willing to invest in the various products available for trade on the stock market. And in both cases, belief plays a key role in determining how willing we are to get behind something. One way to open up the possibility for greater success in our inner economies is to understand that belief is not the reliable guide we sometimes think. There are other more reliable things of success that we can put our faith in, such as passion, feeling, and sense. Some of the most successful investors in the stock market are the ones that go against the grain, trusting their sense over the common opinion held by common people about what will work. In the same way, we can learn to trust our heart’s desires and our sense to guide us, questioning any beliefs that stand in the way of our ability to fully invest in ourselves. As we take out energy from limiting ideas about what is possible, we free up the resources that have the power to make our inner economy prosper. 49. We can safely conclude from the first paragraph that_____. A. our belief is not reliable. B. belief is an obstacle to our success. C. belief is not so important in our success. D. our belief determines our success in some way. 50. According to the passage, if a family of origin has passion for literature, the

members of the family will probably_____. A. teach literature B. hate literature C. write poems D. enter the field of literature 51. We can put our faith in the following things of success except_____. A. passion B. feeling C. sense D. stock market 52. The purpose of the author is_____. A. to teach us a lesson B. to give us some useful suggestions to succeed C. to tell us that our belief is not reliable D. to encourage us to invest in the stock market D George, when your big brother and your little dog and I walked you up to school today, you had no idea how I was feeling. You were so excited. You had packed and unpacked your pencils and safety scissors in your backpack a dozen times. I am really going to miss those lazy mornings when we waved your brother and sister off to school. Because you are my youngest, I had learned a few things by the time you came along. I found out that the seemingly endless days of babyhood are gone like lightning. I blinked(眨眼), and your siblings were setting off for school as eagerly as you did this morning, I was one of the lucky ones; I could choose whether to work or not. By the time it was your turn, the shining prizes of career advancement and a double income had lost their brightness. A splash(溅水) in the pool with you in your bright red boots or "just one more" rereading of your favorite book, Frog and Toad Are Friends, meant more. You didn't go to preschool and I hope that doesn't hold you back. You learned numbers by helping me count the soda cans we returned to the store. I have to admit that in my mind's eye, an image of myself while you're in school has developed, I see myself updating all the photo albums and starting that novel I always wanted to write. As the summer wound down and more frequent quarrels erupted between you and your siblings, I was looking forward to today. And then this morning, I walked you up the steep hill to your classroom and you gave me one of your characteristically fierce, too-tight hugs. This time you were ready to let go before I was. Maybe someday you will deliver a kindergartner to the first day of school. When you turn at the door to wave good-bye, he or she will be too deep in conversation with a new friend to notice. Even as you smile, you'll feel something warm on your cheek. 53. What does the underlined sentence mean in the third paragraph? A. When you reach the school age B. When you decide whether to work or not C. When you were born D When you have your own family 54. Which sentence from the passage best describes how the writer felt on that morning? A. An image of myself while you're in school has developed. B. I was looking forward to today. C. I was one of the lucky ones. D. This time you were ready to let go before I was.

55. Which statement is NOT TRUE about George's family according to the letter? A. George's parents gave birth to three children B. The Georges is a double income family C. They recycled soda cans D. The children had more arguments during the summer 56. The passage tries to show us ________. A. how excited a child will be on his first day to school B. how deeply a mother loves her child C. how many efforts a mother has made to raise a child D. how a mother plans her future life after her children go to school E Move Earth—it’s no science fiction LONDON — Scientists have found an unusual way to prevent our planet from overheating: move it to a cooler spot. All you have to do is send a few comets(彗 星)in the direction of Earth, and its orbit will be changed. Our world will then be sent spinning into a safer, colder part of the solar system. This idea for improving our climate comes from a group of US National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) engineers and American astronomers. They say their plan could add another six billion years to the useful lifetime of our planet—effectively doubling its working life. The plan put forward by Dr Laughlin, and his colleagues Don Korycansky and Fred Adams is designed to carefully direct a comet or asteroid(小行星) so that it passes close by our planet and sends some of its gravitational energy to Earth. “Earth’s orbital speed would increase as a result and we would move to a higher orbit away from the Sun,” Laughlin said. Engineers would then direct their comet so that it passed close to Jupiter or Saturn. The comet would pick up energy from one of these giant planets. Later its orbit would bring it back to Earth, and the process would be repeated. In the short term, the plan provides an ideal way to global warming, although the team was actually concerned with a much greater danger. The sun is certain to heat up in about a billion years and so “seriously compromise” our biosphere(生 物圈)by cooking us. That’s why the group decided to try to save Earth. The plan has one or two worrying aspects, however. For a start, space engineers would have to be very careful about how they directed their asteroid or comet towards Earth. The smallest miscalculation ( 误 算 ) in orbit could fire it straight at Earth—with deadly consequences. There is also the question of the Moon. As the current issue of Scientific American magazine points out, if Earth was pushed out of its current position, it is “most likely the Moon would be stripped away from Earth,” it states. This would greatly change our planet’s climate. 57.What makes the scientists plan to move Earth? A. A few comets are moving to the direction of Earth. B. Earth’s working life is coming to an end soon.
